The Nissan Y62 Patrol is a popular platform for touring, towing and heavy accessory fitment. Bull bars, rear bars, drawers, long range tanks and towing setups can quickly push the vehicle close to or beyond its factory GVM.

We have worked with the Western Australian Department of Transport to secure Type Approval for all three of the Y62 GVM upgrades we offer, this means we can fit, engineer and approve your GVM upgrade in house with no waiting periods for you.

What is a GVM?

GVM stands for Gross Vehicle Mass. It refers to the maximum legal weight a vehicle can carry when fully loaded. This weight includes the vehicle itself, passengers, cargo and accessories such as bullbars, rear bars, winches etc.

For 4WD owners, tourers and those towing heavy trailers, understanding your Gross Vehicle Mass is essential to ensure your vehicle remains safe, compliant and legally registered in WA.

  • Legal Compliance

Every vehicle has a manufacturer-specified GVM limit. Exceeding this limit is illegal and can result in fines, defect notices and registration issues. A compliant GVM upgrade in WA ensures your vehicle meets Department of Transport requirements.

  • Safety

Overloading your vehicle affects braking performance, steering response and overall stability. Staying within your approved Gross Vehicle Mass helps maintain safe handling, especially when touring, towing or carrying additional accessories.

  • Insurance Protection

If your vehicle exceeds its legal GVM at the time of an accident, it may impact insurance claims. A certified GVM upgrade helps protect your coverage and peace of mind.

  • Registration and Road Regulations

Vehicle weight classifications in Western Australia can influence registration categories and legal road use. Ensuring your vehicle is correctly rated is critical for compliance.

Department of Transport Type Approval

What is Type Approval?

Type approval means the upgrade has been formally assessed and approved as a standardised design by the Western Australian Department of Transport.

What does that mean for me?

Having type approval means we can complete your upgrade entirely in house, and have it approved and active as soon as you pick your car up. The upgrade takes from 2-3 days where we fit the kit, take it for a pit inspection at the Department of Transport, and apply the modification plate.
