Turbocharged JB74
No one would ever think of a Jimny as a drag car, which is exactly why we built this.
This vehicle is a test subject of just how far the JB74 platform can be pushed when engine management, fuel delivery, air intake and calibration are fully optimised. We have built and tuned this car in-house through a number of stages, it is a real-world development vehicle for high-performance tuning on the Jimnys.
The powerhouse of the build is a GBC22-350 Garrett turbocharger, chosen for its reliability, response and efficiency under high loads. We are pushing 22psi of boost through it at the peak, so we needed to know it could safely handle a heavy sustained load.
Fuel delivery has been upgraded using our in-house designed system, fine tuned to deliver the amount of fuel required for high power levels. Combined with a front mount intercooler and a manta exhaust system, the engine is able to breathe efficiently while maintaining stable intake temperatures and exhaust flow.
To manage the complexities in this build, the factory ECU was replaced with a Syvecs standalone ECU. This allowed us complete control over the timing and fuel delivery, allowed for engine protection measures to be implemented, provides a high level of data feedback and customisation to fine tune the build. The faster processing speed and high levels of data tracking allows the car to respond instantly to changing conditions while maintaining safety across the entire operating range.
We fitted Ohlins remote reservoir shocks to provide control and stability under heavy acceleration and high speed operation. Our current top speed on the strip was 177km/h, which is well above what the manufacturer designed the factory suspension to manage.
The result of this build is a JB74 producing 285HP at the wheels, and weighing in around 1 tonne. With a current top time of 13.0 on the quarter mile, this car holds the title of fastest JB74 in Australia at this time. Numbers that are wildly above what most would consider possible for this platform to produce.
But this build shows more than just impressive numbers, it demonstrates what can be achieved with the correct combination of hardware, engine management, and calibration. Everything we learn from pushing this vehicle feeds directly into how we manage our customers builds, ensuring we can be confident in the setup we are offering.
This JB74 Jimny isn’t just about speed. It’s about understanding the platform, refining the process, and setting new benchmarks for what these vehicles can achieve when engineered properly. And we are no where near done yet, we're going to push the car even further in 2026.
